Hourly Assistant Job Description for DPS Food and Nutrition Services

Summary of Position:

Under the direction of the Food Service Manager, assists in all aspects of cooking and/or baking school breakfasts and/or lunches as required.  Assists in the responsibility of cashiering and daily cleanup of school lunchroom.  Completes other duties as assigned. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Prepares or assists in the preparation, including cooking and/or baking, of a variety of foods in accordance with departmental work production standards.
  2. Sets up serving lines and serves meal or meal components.
  3. Assists in collection of money for food and beverages served during the day.
  4. Cleans and sanitizes in accordance to approved housekeeping and safety practice for the following:  pots/pans/utensils, counters and prep tables, dish room and restroom facilities, tables and chairs in lunchroom and kitchen floors.
  5. Operates, cleans and sanitizes all kitchen equipment.
  6. Follows approved housekeeping and safety practice to ensure that safe conditions are maintained in the kitchen, food-serving areas, and in dining area.
  7. Stores food and supplies in accordance with instructions.
  8. May fill in for lunchroom manager when they are absent for short periods of time.
  9. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications – Elementary School Lunchroom Positions:

  1. High school diploma or GED preferred.
  2. Must demonstrate ability and experience in cooking or baking.
  3. Must demonstrate ability and experience in cashiering.  
  4. Must have passed a minimum of two DPS Food Service training classes, excluding Orientation class.
  5. Must have scored average or above in all categories on last evaluation.
  6. Must demonstrate computer knowledge.
