Entry Level Substitute Job Description for DPS Food and Nutrition Services

Summary of Position:

Performs a variety of kitchen duties as assigned in the preparation and serving of school meals. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Prepares or assists in the preparation of a variety of foods in accordance with departmental work production standards.
  2. Sets up serving lines and serves meal or meal components.
  3. Accepts money for food and beverages served during the day.
  4. Cleans and sanitizes, in accordance with approved housekeeping and safety practices for the following:  pots/pans/utensils, counters and prep tables, dish room and restroom facilities, tables and chairs in lunchroom and kitchen floors.
  5. Operates, cleans and sanitizes all kitchen equipment.
  6. Follows approved housekeeping and safety practices to ensure that safe conditions are maintained in the kitchen, food-serving areas and in dining area.
  7. Stores food and supplies in accordance with instructions.

Qualifications:

  1. High school diploma or GED is preferred but not required.
  2. Completion of the orientation class prior to start date.
  3. Completion of food preparation classes provided by the Department of Food and Nutrition Services encouraged, but not required.
  4. For advancement to hourly workers complete a six-week probationary period in one kitchen after which an evaluation is completed by Lunchroom Manager.  Substitute must score at least average or above on evaluation.
