I have worked for the Department of Food and Nutrition Services for almost 34 years – with 21 years in the kitchens. As is true for many of us it began as a job that worked well around a young family. On the first day of school I was assigned as the cook at Columbian Elementary School in spite of the fact I didn’t know how to use the can opener. I later worked for several years at Horace Mann and Lake Middle Schools as a baker and a cook. I also worked as the manager at Marrama Elementary School.
My first manager immediately encouraged me to “learn the books” and to begin taking all of the training offered. The classes took almost three years to complete and in addition to what I learned and earned, they provided an opportunity to talk with other employees, share ideas and experiences. I joined and attended DSFSA and CSFSA meetings, workshops and conventions. I received CFSFA and AFSFA accreditation. It was on my first trip to a National Convention that I realized what a large and powerful organization we are a part of and what a tremendous service we provide. I also had the opportunity on two different occasions to work on our contract negotiations – a very valuable experience.
Almost thirteen years ago I applied to work in the office as the Secretary/Requisition Clerk. My primary responsibility was to maintain our warehouse stock levels. The experience I gained in our kitchens made this possible. I was then encouraged by my supervisor and director to take classes and training to become a buyer. I received certification as a Public Buyer and have held the position since.
The Department of Food and Nutrition Services is an always changing, challenging, and rewarding place to work. We continue to be provided with opportunities for growth and advancement. I am so proud to be a part of this very hard working team! |
