Providing nutritious meals to our students is our commitment to the Denver community. We recognize that well-nourished children are better equipped to learn. Providing healthy food and nutrition education are the key ingredients in educating students to make choices that will develop into life-long healthy eating habits. We have a commitment to excellence, a devotion and passion for child nutrition.
Food and Nutrition Services Department for Denver Public Schools is a $30.5 million non-profit business. We are a unique department in the school system because we are self-supporting – we receive no funds from the City of Denver or the school district. We pay all operating and non-operating expenses, payroll, benefits, utilities, administrative costs, food and supply costs, equipment and repair costs, technology costs, depreciation, etc. One hundred percent of our income comes from food sales.
We employ over 550 dedicated professionals who take pride in preparing, delivering and serving over 14,500 breakfasts and 38,700 lunches daily in over 142 schools, including charter schools, Early Childhood Educational Programs (Head Start), and other special programs.
We serve a la carte items in selected schools, operate our own healthy food vending program and manage the District’s beverage contract.
Our program is an enhancement to the educational programs of the District – HUNGRY CHILDREN CANNOT LEARN. The program is operated under the federally funded National School Lunch Act and the Child Nutrition Act. All federal laws regulating the program are administered by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), through the Denver regional office and implemented by the Colorado Department of Education (CDE).
The program objectives are to safeguard the health and well-being of students by providing nutritious food in a safe environment at an affordable price and to help ensure that participating children gain a full understanding of the relationship between proper eating and good health.
