Greatest Assets, August 2005

Friday August 26, 2005 was an in-service training day for our managers that was held at Denver School of the Arts (DSA).

inTEAM Associates, Inc. presenters led a day of fun while educating managers that employees are a departments greatest asset.

Presenters:
Dorothy Pannell-Martin, BS, MA, President
Gertrude Applebaum, BS, Vice President
Julie Boettger, BS, MS, RD, Director of Operations

Topics presented:

Prepare Yourself for Success
An effective leader is one that cares about the people he or she leads.  They like people, enjoy helping others, and are sincere, considerate, fair and warmhearted.  The effective leader realizes that employees are the department’s most important asset.

  • Role of a Leader
  • Difference Between a Boss and a Leader
  • Identify Your Style of Managing
    Democratic Authoritarian/Dictator.Paternal
    Laissez-faire or 'Hands Off' Situational

A fun activity was to build a paper house as a team with various leadership styles.  For many managers it was a stretch outside their norm.

Resolving Conflict
There are two sides to conflict & causes and there is more than one way to resolve conflict.

  • Causes of Conflict
  • Difference Between a Boss and a Leader
  • Is it the Work or the People?

Performance Appraisals
If a manager has done his/her job well, there should be no surprises for an employee at an annual evaluation.  Don't save up what you think but discuss performance on an ongoing basis.

  • Take two minutes every two weeks to discuss individual performance with each employee
  • Oral/Written Evaluations
  • Disciplinary Process
  • Dismissal May Be the Only Way

Another fun activity was when two employees were asked to role-play situations such as:
                 Bad Evaluator - Bad Employee
                 Good Evaluator - Bad Listener
which left everyone, through over-acting on our managers part, laughing but visibly seeing what works and what doesn't.

Managing Time and Productivity
Do you stay busy but do not accomplish the tasks that should have been top priority?  Do you feel like work manages you ratheryou managing work?  Do you take work home and don't ever seem to catch up?

  • Set Priorities
  • Organize Your Work Space
  • Delegate, Delegate, Delegate
  • Work Schedules

Handling Difficult Employees
What makes an employee difficult and what can you do about it?
Make it better, make it worse or let it continue as is?

  • Types of Difficult People
  • Why Do They Do What They Do?
  • Can Difficult Behavior Be Changed?

Motivating and Rewarding
Motivation is defined as stimulating action.  It is the force within people that compel them to work toward the goal or to do what they do, either positive or negative.  People are motivated by a place that is fun and where they think they make a difference.  Managers cannot motivate others, can motivate themselves and provide the environment that motivates others.

  • What Motivates You?
  • What Motivates Your Employees?
  • When Long-Service Employees Lose Interest
  • Recognition and Rewards for Success
  • Rewards That Cost Little
