Food & Nutrition Services is excited to offer new a la carte items to all DPS students- in addition to our healthy, hot school lunches and free breakfasts for all students. The new snack items meet U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Smart Snack regulations and are complaint with our district's wellness guidelines. The snacks come in individually wrapped small portions and meet limited standards for sugar, sodium or saturated fats.
Some examples of these items include granola bars, string cheese, yogurt, whole grain cookies, baked chips, popcorn, 100% juice slushies, reduced-sugar fruit snacks, and muffins.
Food & Nutrition Services' area supervisors are working with school leaders to determine which a la carte items will be sold. Schools may choose to limit items, days of sales, grades, the number of items sold per child or maximum dollar amount of purchases. Families will be able to regulate which items their children are allowed to purchase through the DPS school lunch payment app. No student will be allowed to purchase a la carte items without either cash or a positive balance in their meal account.
DPS' Food & Nutrition Services operation is self-funded: the money the department earns from selling food items to students, families and teachers, as well as federal and state government funding, must cover the cost of food, salaries for approximately 800 employees, equipment and other operational expenses. The addition of a la carte menu items helps cover the operational costs of Food & Nutrition Services so we are able to continue offering healthy meals to all our students every day, contributing to our district vision that Every Child Succeeds.Available A La Carte Items 19/20 | A La Carte Items Nutritionals | USDA Smart Snacks Guide
