Land Acknowledgement

Stedman Elementary School acknowledges the indigenous people and land of the Park Hill neighborhood and the broader Denver area. We honor and acknowledge that we are on the traditional territories and ancestral homelands of the Ute, Cheyenne and Arapahoe Nations. We recognize that this area was also the site of trade, hunting, gathering, information sharing, ally and family building, and healing for over 45 other Native Nations including the Lakota, Kiowa, Comanche, Apache, Shoshone, and others.

We recognize the Indigenous peoples as the original stewards of the land, water, plants, and animals who call this place home and that their continual ties to these traditional homelands run deep.  We also acknowledge the painful history of genocide and forced removal from this territory as well as the continued exclusions and erasures of Indigenous peoples by government, corporate, academic, and cultural institutions. We respect the many diverse Indigenous peoples still connected to this land on which we gather and pay our respect to them giving thanks to all Tribal Nations and the ancestors of this place. May our acknowledgment be one step in our commitment to dismantling ongoing legacies of oppression and inequities of Indigenous communities in Colorado.
